10 influential bass clarinetists from all genres unite in Basklarinet Festijn: Armand Angster, Petra Stump, Heinz-Peter Linshalm, Stephan Vermeersch, Fie Schouten, Tobias Klein, Jelte Althuis, Laura Carmichael, Marij van Gorkom and Oğuz Büyükberber preform in our opening concert.

Harry

Sparnaay

Harry Sparnaay (NL) played solo at numerous music festivals all over the world. He has been a featured performer with many major orchestras and ensembles.
Harry Sparnaay was professor of bass clarinet and contemporary music at the Conservatoires of Amsterdam and Utrecht where his unique bass clarinet programme attracted students from all over the world. He has also been musician-in-residence and has given masterclasses at several universities.

Fie

Schouten

Fie studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she received her Bachelor Diplomas in clarinet and bass clarinet and a Masters Degree in bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay, Tom Sieuwerts, and Herman Braune.
Fie is bass clarinet teacher at the Prince Claus Conservatory Groningen and guest-professor bass clarinet at Codarts Rotterdam.
As a specialist in performing new music, she can be heard extensively as a soloist and in chamber music formations.
Fie Schouten initiated and leads together with Tobias Klein the Basklarinet Festijn

Vermeersch

Stephan Vermeersch (BE) has gained an international reputation as versatile performer-improviser-composer of classical, contemporary, world and electro-acoustical music with many crossovers to other cultures and art forms (visual arts, dance, film, architecture, literature, theater…).

Armand

Angster

Armand Angster is a solist covering repertoire from Mozart to the most recent works of the 21st century as well as improvised music. He is the artistic director of the ensemble AccrocheNote.
Armand Angster plays jazz and improvised music in mixed written/improvised projects. He also teaches clarinet and chamber music at the Strasbourg conservatoire and in courses and masterclasses.

Bok

Henri Bok (NL) is a very active worldwide ambassador of his beloved instrument, one to which he has devoted his life as a performer, teacher, improviser and composer. His unique rich and warm sound can be heard on numerous recordings.

Watts

Sarah Watts (UK) is an award winning British Clarinettist who has gained an international reputation for her work as a solo bass clarinettist. Her work both as a soloist and with her various chamber ensembles has led to numerous CD releases and invitations to perform all over the world.

Vlad

Weverbergh

Vlad Weverbergh (BE) feels at home in numerous genres as different as Mozart, klezmer, and cutting-edge avant-garde. Upon completing his studies at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory with Walter Boeykens, Vlad stayed on as guest lecturer of chamber music. Presently he is the Conservatory’s bass clarinet lecturer.

Matthias

Mueller

Matthias Mueller received a broad musical training at the University of Music in Basle; his most important teachers were Hans Rudolf Stalder and Jürg Wyttenbach. Since 1996 Matthias Müller has lived in Zurich and is Professor for Clarinet at the Zurich University of the Arts. He has gained a reputation as a versatile artist and is active as an interpreter, composer and teacher as well as the Artistic Director of various institutions and for various projects.

Tobias

Klein

Tobias Klein (DE/NL) studied saxophone and bass clarinet at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with, among others, Jasper Blom and Harry Sparnaay.
As a performing musician, his focus lies mainly on improvised music and contemporary jazz, enriched by his studies of contemporary composed music, live-electronics and techniques derived from African, Eastern European and Asian music. He currently (co-)leads the groups Spinifex, Lackritz, Maw Sit Sit and the duo Oguz Buyukberber/Tobias Klein.
Tobias composes for both contemporary jazz groups and for chamber music ensembles. His work as a composer is supported by the Performing Arts Fund NL

Oğuz

Büyükberber

Turkish born clarinetist, improviser/composer Oğuz Büyükberber’s work stands on the crossroads of contemporary composition, improvisation, Turkish music, and jazz. He studied bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay, and audited Theo Loevendie’s composition classes at Amsterdam Conservatory.
He has performed in major festivals all over Europe such as North Sea, Traumzeit, Akbank and London Jazz Festivals, recorded seven CD’s and participated in over 40 album productions.
